TPAM – Performing Arts Meeting in Yokohama is a space where people from various places in the world who are professionally involved in performing arts get together to exchange through diverse performance and meeting programs and gain information, inspiration and network for the creation, dissemination and vitalization of performing arts. Having celebrated the 20th anniversary, it is internationally recognized as one of the most influential performing arts platforms in Asia.
TPAM started as Tokyo Performing Arts Market in 1995. In 2011, we moved to Yokohama, renamed ourselves as “Meeting” instead of “Market,” and renewed the programs as a platform for a wide range of performing arts activities not limited to “buying and selling” of productions. We have also reinforced our Asian focus since 2015; we are involving ourselves in Asian co-productions and putting even more importance than before on networking in Asia.
Throughout the 9-day period, more than 50 artists / companies present more than 200 performances. More than 300 meetings, discussions and seminars are held. More than 700 people from around 40 countries who professionally engage in performing arts as artists, festival directors, venue producers, facilitators, company managers, presenters and in other forms of work participate. Including non-professional audience, more than 15,000 people visit the “Creative City” Yokohama looking for encounters with performing arts.
TPAM2018 (Performing Arts Meeting in Yokohama 2018) will be held from February 10 (Sat) through 18 (Sun), 2018, organized by Performing Arts Meeting in Yokohama 2018 Executive Committee (The Japan Foundation Asia Center, Kanagawa Arts Foundation, Yokohama Arts Foundation and PARC – Japan Center, Pacific Basin Arts Communication). We plan to announce the program and open the registration form in November.
- Started as Tokyo Performing Arts Market (TPAM), an annual event for promoting circulation of performing arts productions.
- Defined the main target of TPAM as national and international professionals who engage in contemporary performing arts.
- Reorganized the performance programs that used to invite applications into curated programs by selected directors.
- TPAM Fringe that would invite applications started.
- Hosted the first Asian Satellite Meeting of IETM (International Network for Contemporary Performing Arts) in Japan
- Defined the main purpose of TPAM as international open network building among professionals.
- Renamed TPAM Fringe as TPAM Showcase and reorganized the system.
- Hosted an international conference, “Performing Arts Presenters’ Network Conference,” on the theme of Asian professional Network.
- Co-organized a showcase of interactive performing arts, “Connected,” with British Council.
- Moved from Tokyo to Yokohama and renamed itself as Performing Arts Meeting in Yokohama.
- Reorganized the performance programs of respective genres into TPAM Direction, where selected directors would create their own concept and program.
- Hosted the second Asian Satellite Meeting of IETM in Japan.
- Held TPAM in Yokohama Summer Session in response to the Great East Japan Earthquake and the nuclear accident of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, which took place immediately after TPAM in February, at Yokohama Creativecity Center.
- Started international conferences and performance programs on the theme of AIR (Artist-In-Residence) in performing arts.
- Held TPAM in Yokohama Autumn Session on the themes of freedom of expression and international activities of young artists at Yokohama Creativecity Center.
- Discontinued the booth exhibition, which would be replaced by TPAM Exchange, an exchange program based on Group Meetings and Speed Networking.
- Reinforced the focus on contemporary performing arts in Asia.
- Started to explore new schemes of “Co-Production” as a model of international cooperation.
- Started a music program in consideration for the diversity of the forms of performing arts in Asia.
- Took part in international co-productions as TPAM for the first time (Dancing with Death by Pichet Klunchun and Baling by Mark Teh).
- Took part in the third international co-production BALABALA by Eko Supriyanto.
- Co-hosted Asian Dramaturgs’ Network Meeting 2017 with Centre42 (Singapore).
